Item details

Mawata silk hankies -- 100% Silk Fiber that you can spin, knit (without spinning), or use in felting, paper making, or collage. Don't be intimidated to try this fiber -- I've provided a lot of useful information in my blog to help you along:

This listing is for one 10gram stack (approx 10-12 hankies/layers) in the colorway shown in the first two photos and described below. I can dye more of this colorway on request. You'll need several 10gram packages depending on your project, or just buy one to play around with and see if you like it.

Cranberry Red: It takes several reds to get the cranberry effect that I offer in other yarns: you need bright cherry/fire engine type red, cooler crimson, and hints of burgundy. You will get a selection of bright and darker hankies that will knit up into Cranberry. The lighter bits will look like the lighter section of the sample in photo-3. The darker bits will look like the darker red section. The reds might look pale to you in hankie form, but when you knit them, they concentrate into flaming cheerful reds.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water; lay flat to dry

Mawata Silk!
This is 100% silk fiber that is a stack of individual cocoons that have had their glue removed and have been stretched into a square "hanky" shape. You peel off individual layers for use in several crafts. They have recently become very popular in the knitting world since you can stretch each square into a length of yarn and knit directly without having to prepare or spin the fiber beforehand. It's easy and lots of fun. I have shown photos of two different scarves I am knitting/have knitted with mawata silk hankies. The pattern is Hitchhiker Scarf by Martina Behm, and I bought mine off Ravelry as a download.

My multicolor scarf has 34 "teeth" and measures 52" long by 9" at the widest point. I used 40 grams of mawata silk hankies to knit it. Mawata is best sold by weight. You can knit a pair of women's mitts with 30-40grams. A longer or larger scarf than mine shown would require more than 40grams.

I have posted three detailed blog entries on this fiber -- what it is, how to use it, and frequently asked questions about it. All three entires were posted on Saturday June 23. My blog is:

Also feel free to convo me any questions you might have about this product.

I hand-dye all my yarns one at a time, with care and attention to detail. I live in a non-smoking, dog/cat-free home.

Packages ship within three business days of receipt of payment. Please read my profile box for details on my policies.

I ship by Airmail to the US and Canada. Most packages arrive in one to two weeks.

**International/Overseas Buyers Only: Shipping rates listed are for Airmail. Surface/Ground takes two to three months, but Airmail typically takes one to three weeks. If you prefer the cheaper method of shipping and don't mind a really long wait, I can refund you the difference between Airmail and surface and ship it that way instead. Surface rates are usually the same as those listed to the US.

Silk hankies are so easy to work with when the are uniform and packaged so perfectly as these are. Been looking for a solid red for awhile. Can't stand it when they come just thrown in a bag as if they are used. Thank you. I will be ordering more.

I ship within three business days of receipt of payment. I accept custom/special orders with about a week of turnaround time.

I am happy to combine shipping in order to get you the best deal.

***Shipping Rates/Charges***

I use the cheapest available shipping rate (Surface/Ground) for all packages going to Canada and the US. Your shipping includes postage and packaging. Most packages arrive in one to two weeks. If your package has not arrived in three weeks, I definitely want to know about it. I can refund or replace your order if it has not arrived within six weeks.

Yes, it does cost more to ship from Canada to Canada, than it does to ship from Canada to the US. Sad but true.

International/Overseas Destinations:

I used to charge surface/ground internationally, but I was finding my packages took two to three months to arrive, especially to Australia and the UK.

I have now changed all my International shipping rates to cover Airmail postage to all non Canada/US destinations. Packages arrive in one to three weeks.

If you prefer a cheaper method of shipping and don't mind a really long wait, I can refund you the difference between Airmail and surface and ship it that way instead.

I accept payment by Paypal. It is possible to pay by major credit card through Paypal, without having a Paypal account. If you need help figuring this out, please feel free to convo me.

Returns & exchanges

I do not have a standard return policy, but I am committed to keeping my clients happy. I like to deal with each situation individually. Please do contact me if you have any problems or disappointments with your order.

**If you do plan to return your yarn or any other product, I would like to know as soon as possible. Items, especially yarn, must be in their original condition, and buyer pays return shipping.
