Item details

Mason jars are fantastic - inexpensive, dishwasher-safe, and the glass is BPA free. They come in many shapes and sizes, and are great for portion control because the measurements are often marked on the side. But have you tried carrying your lunch in one? They tip over and clink together. So the Jars to Go Bag is designed to carry 2 canning jars, padded with fleece to keep them safe, and in sleeves to keep them upright. The sleeves fold out of the way if you want to carry something else, as shown in the fourth photo.

Though I offer finished bags for sale, I know that some folks would rather make their own. So this listing is for an easy, beginner-friendly pattern to make your own 2-jar bag! It is very simple and includes lots of photos and detailed instructions; and if you run into trouble, I'm just an email away! I recommend medium-weight woven fabrics - examples show cotton duck or ticking on the outside, muslin for the lining. You will also need a bit of fusible craft fleece.

This listing is for a PDF pattern to sew your own bag. It will be available for download through Etsy after purchase. It comes in two files - the first contains the instructions and the pint size pattern pieces; the second file is quart/Weck size and half-pint size pieces. It is not an actual bag, and does not include photo props such as jars, food, silverware or napkin.

Materials needed:
Quart: Outer fabric, 5/8 yard; lining, 3/4 yard; fleece, 1/2 yard
Pint: Outer fabric, 1/2 yard; lining, 2/3 yard; fleece, 3/8 yard
Half-pint: Outer fabric, 1/2 yard; lining, 5/8 yard; fleece, 1/3 yard

Also:
Thread
1 1/4 yards 1" wide grosgrain ribbon or other sturdy trim, if you want to reinforce the handles
(And add a little extra fabric if you want to make a cloth napkin to match)

Can you sell bags made by this pattern? Yes, BUT: only as many as the purchaser of the pattern can personally make. No collective or factory production. If bags are sold online, please give design credit to Kim Payne of atinyforest.com. The pattern itself may not be distributed in any way, for sale or for free.

FAQs

I know my zero-waste customers want to know! I am happy to report that I have transitioned to all recycled/recyclable packaging products! Your order will come either wrapped in kraft paper, or in a cardboard box, depending on what is most suitable for your order. It will be sealed with recyclable paper tape. I do use heat-printed labels - I know they're evil, but they save ink (packaging) and trips to the post office (gas). I limit the "extra papers" to one business card and one tiny thank-you. I will leave those out if you ask.

great little bags!! we use half gallon mason jars to bottle our milk at a local dairy farm, so i altered the pattern a bit to fit the larger jars... they fit great and will be so much easier and safer to transport.
