Cardamom, or Elettaria cardamomum, is also known as Amomum cardamomum, Bai Dou Kou, Cardamon, Cardomomi Fructus, and Ela.

The sweetly aromatic cardamom is the fruit of a tropical plant related to ginger, and one of the world's most expensive spices, after saffron and vanilla.

Growing cardamom is extremely labor intensive. The tall plants, grown on plantations in Guatemala or India, flower for eight or nine months of the year. Each pod, or capsule, ripens slowly, but must be plucked when it is three-quarters ripe.

After harvest, the pods are washed and dried. It is the three seeds inside each pod, however, that are considered the spice.

The best way to use cardamom is to purchase whole pods and remove the seeds as needed. This form of the herb retains its aroma and flavor longest.

Herbs are always fresh, organic and not crushed into a powder like they've been scrapped from the bottom of a container. I love buying from this shop! Cyn, the shop owner, does an amazing job with the description of each herb and tea. There is always such great care in the packaging to make sure all arrives safe, not damaged or leaking. Plus everything is always packaged pretty and labeled. Item is as described, packaged well and shipped fast
