IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: I will be retiring and closing my shop soon. I have only a few pre-printed patterns remaining, and once they're gone I won't be printing any more. So if you're planning to order a printed pattern, do it soon. The downloadable patterns will continue to be available until Aug. 31, 2018.

This is the printed version of my original Basic Ballgown Sewing Pattern, to help you make your own ballroom DanceSport competition costume.

SPECIAL OFFER: For a limited time, when you purchase this pattern, you will receive a free Ballroom Gown Construction Manual CD, a $25 value.

(COUPON: Receive 15 percent off when you spend $50 or more in a single purchase in my shop. Use coupon code dance15 at checkout. Please note: This code only works on individual purchases over $50. It is not retroactive.)

WHAT YOU GET: Everything you need to guide you through the process of making your own ballroom DanceSport competition costume.

The Pattern comes pre-printed on large sheets of paper, just like commercial patterns, and includes three sizes -- Small, Medium, and Large.

The Manual comes on a CD that you can view on your computer and print from your home printer. It takes you step-by-step through the process of creating a gown, and includes such tidbits as:
•How to choose the right style for your body
•How to pick the right fabric for your style
•How to turn your dress form into your own body double that you can even stick pins into
•What equipment and supplies you'll need, plus substitutions for things you don't have
•How to customize our Basic Gown Pattern by changing the neckline, sleeves and skirt
•How to incorporate elements from commercial patterns into our Basic Gown Pattern
•How to use dyes, paints, lace motifs, rhinestones, fringe and other ornaments Where to order fabrics and supplies
•And much, much more, complete with lots of color images.

The disc can be viewed on both Macintosh and Windows computers. You'll just need a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, which I'll help you download for free.

The pattern is for a simple princess-line panel dress with scoop neckline and built-in bodysuit. It includes cutting lines for a princess-seamed gown with a flared panel skirt, and for a star design with quarter-circle skirt inserts. It can easily be customized by changing the neckline or adding drapes or floats. It can also be shortened for a Latin costume. The dress can be made with long sleeves, or sleeveless with optional gauntlets.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a beginner's sewing pattern. It is a professional pattern designed for expert-level sewers. It does NOT have cutting layout diagrams. However, the accompanying Manual provides loads of information to help you through the process.

You can view some photos of costumes made from this pattern on my profile page:

NOTE: When you buy a pattern or manual from me, you are also purchasing my expertise. If you need help, just send me a Convo and I will be happy to answer your questions.

I've been in the business of making custom-designed ballroom dance costumes for many years, and during that time I've picked up a lot of tricks of the trade, and also developed some of my own techniques. Since I was a dance competitor myself, I know what works and what doesn't, not just what looks good. I've put all this accumulated knowledge into this manual and pattern.

This pattern and Manual were created by Linda Blust and are copyrighted to Linda Blust, DanceSport Ballgowns and DanceSport Sewing. You may use them to make items for sale, but you may not resell or share the pattern or Manual, or any part of them, without permission fom Linda Blust or DanceSport Sewing.

Please note that manuals and patterns are not returnable.

BUYERS OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES: Please read my store policies for information on customs fees and taxes that your government may charge you for international purchases.

Shipping prices reflect the latest USPS postage rates.
Unless you request otherwise, all orders will be sent via the least expensive method. Depending on weight, that can be USPS First Class, Priority Mail or UPS.
Overnight shipping can be arranged for an additional fee.
Fabric can be heavy and bulky, and shipping is expensive. In some cases, it is possible for shipping costs to be higher than the price of the fabric, particularly when overseas shipping is involved.
To add to the confusion, Etsy does not provide a method to combine shipping prior to checkout. So if you purchase several items at once, it's possible that you will end up overpaying for postage. When that happens, I will refund the overpayment.
All items will be shipped no more than two business days after purchase, unless you are notified otherwise.
For more information on shipping prices, please consult the US Postal Service's postage price calculator:
All of my items ship from zip code 89521.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: There are no shipping or customs charges for downloaded items.
If you buy something that must be shipped, the least expensive shipping option is First Class International, which can take three weeks or longer to reach destinations outside the United States. Also, detailed tracking is not available for First Class packages after they leave the US.
If you need tracking or faster delivery, please contact me before purchasing for options and prices.

DUTIES AND TAXES: Buyers from outside the United States are responsible for any customs duties, VAT, and/or other fees levied upon delivery by their own country.
I am not responsible for any customs fees, tariffs, VATs and handling fees that your country may impose on you. Those fees are your responsibility.
Every country has its own methods of determining how much to tax imported goods. Please educate yourself about your own country's tax system.
The following calculator can help you determine your approximate customs fees (but please note that the calculator doesn't include any processing fees that may be charged by post offices and delivery services):
I mark true value on all customs forms and include a copy of the invoice in the package. It is illegal for me to lie on customs forms, and I will not do so. It is also illegal for me to pay your customs fees for you.
Printed materials, such as patterns and books, are not usually taxed, but I cannot guarantee it.
If you don't want to pay your customs taxes, please contact me before shipping so I can refund your full purchase price.
Once it is shipped, if you refuse to pay your customs taxes, the item will eventually be returned to me. I will not issue a refund until after I receive the returned item, which may take several months to reach me. If I receive it back in unused and resellable condition, I will refund the purchase price, minus shipping, including any fees that I am charged for return shipping.
For more information about customs fees, please refer to the following discussions in the Etsy forums:

SPECIAL NOTE TO UK BUYERS: If your purchase is over the UK limit of £15 (about $23 USD) you may be liable to 20% taxes and £8 handling charge before your package can be delivered.
Printed materials, such as patterns and books, are not usually taxed, but I cannot guarantee it.
These duties & taxes are set by the UK government. The handling fee is charged by Royal Mail on ALL parcels handled by them or by Parcel Force that attract import taxes, and it is non-avoidable and non-negotiable. There is nothing I, as a seller, can legally do to prevent either charge.

I accept payments by credit card and PayPal.
If you need help with the checkout process, please refer to or contact me for assistance.

Returns & exchanges

Patterns and Manuals are not returnable.
Fabric sold by the yard is also not returnable, as this is cut to your specifications.
Fabric sold by the piece is returnable within 7 days after you receive it for a full refund.
I do my best to represent colors accurately, but please be aware that colors may look different on your computer. If the exact shade is important to you, or if you're trying to match something, please feel free to ask questions or request a swatch.

Additional policies

When you purchase a sewing pattern or manual from my shop, you are buying my years of expertise. If you need help or are unclear about any instructions, feel free to send me a Convo. I will be happy to answer your questions.

All manuals and patterns in this shop were created by Linda Blust and are copyrighted by Linda Blust, DanceSport Ballgowns, and DanceSport Sewing. They are available for your personal use. You may use the information to make items for sale, but please do not duplicate them without express permission fom Linda Blust or DanceSport Sewing.

I am often asked why my patterns are more expensive than commercial mass-market patterns.
These patterns are the culmination of my life's work as a ballroom costume designer. They took many years to develop, and hundreds of hours to digitize on expensive software. My printing costs are $25 per pattern for the big ballroom patterns, plus the cost of envelopes, ink and paper for the instructions and enclosures. The big-name pattern companies are able to keep their costs down with mass printings on huge offset presses using rolls of thin recyled newsprint. That's not an option for me, because I'm dealing with a limited niche market.
The Basic Ballgown Pattern measures 52 sf and weighs close to 1 pound -- too heavy for cheap first-class shipping.
Even if I am able to sell one pattern a day, which is an optimistic expectation for such a specialized market, I would have to charge $100 each just to clear minimum wage. Obviously I can't sell them at that price. So I am charging less than half that, and hope that over time I will be able to at least recoup my expenses.
I am now retired from making dance costumes, but am continuing to sell my patterns because I believe there is a need for them, not because I'm greedy. Ballroom dancers are accustomed to paying up to $5,000 for a custom-made gown. I know that $45 for a pattern isn't cheap, but it's still a bargain if it will save thousands. And for the price, you get not only the pattern, but also my expertise and years of experience, and my availability to answer any questions.

Patterns are available in two forms: Either pre-printed on large sheets of paper that will be mailed to you; or emailed to you in PDF format that you can print at home on either US Letter or International A4 paper.
The gown patterns are quite large and it takes about an hour to tape all the pages together.
If you live in the US, I strongly recommend that you spend the additional $20 for the printed pattern, provided you have time to wait three or four days for delivery.
But if you live outside the US, you might prefer the downloadable version. Even though it's a lot of work to assemble, it will save you a lot of waiting time, shipping cost and potential customs fees.

I do my best to represent colors accurately, but please be aware that colors may look different on your computer. If the exact shade is important to you, or if you're trying to match something, please feel free to ask questions or request a swatch.
