Item details

This fabric is 36 inches wide and is sold by the yard. Fabric is not cut until ordered, so if you order more than one yard, they will be continuous yards.

This is a primarily black fabric with a white ikat design woven into it. The ikat pattern is dyed into the thread before before it is woven. Bindings which resist the dye penetration are applied to the threads in the desired pattern and the threads are then dyed before the cloth is woven. It takes great skill on the part of the person doing the dying and the weaver to accomplish this intricate process. Each piece of fabric is woven on a foot loom without the use of electricity. The colors and patterns vary according to the weaver. Usually the weaving is a family business and is done in the weaver’s home. Since the fabric is hand woven, it measures 36 inches wide and is sold by the yard. This fabric is 100% cotton.

The fabric is so pretty and soft. Debbie was so great to work with and even though there was a mixup with our order she was quick to communicate and resolve it. I highly recommend this shop for the quality of fabrics and Debbie for her customer service! I’ll be a returning customer.

Additional policies

All the fabrics on this site are 100% cotton hand-dyed and hand-woven in Guatemala. The regular fabric is 36 inches wide. The fabric is not cut until you buy it. When you order multiple yards, you'll receive your fabric in a continuous piece.

Since these fabrics are hand woven there might be slight imperfections. These are characteristics that make the fabric stand out from machine made fabrics.

The corte pieces are different widths. The width of each one is in the description.

Fabrics should be prewashed before sewing with them. Edges of the fabric should be zigzagged to prevent fraying. Fabrics should be washed with the fixative, Retayne, to fix the color. Please follow the instructions on the bottle of Retayne. Remove fabric from the machine right after the final spin cycle. Dry in the dryer until damp dry using the coolest temperature. Fabric should then be hung up to finish drying.

Retayne can be ordered on-line from any number of sites such as Joanne’s or Amazon.
