Prickly Pear Cactus
Large Yellow Flowers
Succulent Dark Purple Fruit
Rare Historical cactus that is native only to a small area around San Antonio, Texas. Opuntia Cacanapa is presently being grown at the famous Alamo courtyard. There is no doubt that it was growing wild and/or in cultivation in and around the mission on that fateful day on March 6th, 1836 when the Alamo was under a 13 day siege by a powerful Mexican military force led by General Santa Anna that ultimately took the lives of 182 brave American defenders including legends Col. William Travis, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie. This highly desirable plant has large attractive edible blue gray pads. In summer blooms put forth a very nice display of frilly lemon yellow flowers followed by large plump juicy edible purple fruit, perfect for making exotic flavorful hot summer cold beverages, jams, jellies, or eating fresh. Opuntia Cacanapa has never had any problem with cold temperatures for the last 20 years growing in our zone 7 central Oklahoma climate. In winter with our harsh northern winds we often dipped below zero degrees.
