The French Air Service started using roundels on military aircraft during WWI. Soon their allies, including the British RAF and United States Army Air Service, started using roundels as well. After WWI other air forces adopted roundel insignia as a way to identify military aircraft.
The military aviation insignia of the United States of America had several changes in the early 20th Century. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor in 1941 it was realized that the white star/red dot aircraft insignia could be confused with the Japanese Hinomaru (red dot insignia). In May 1942 the white star/red dot insignia was changed to a white star on a blue roundel, and used until June 1943.
