Item details

This Dewa small brass drawer handle can be used as a piece of cabinet hardware but would also look great on the cover of a scrapbook journal or altered book.

Made in Indonesia, it has four round holes through which you would attach it with screws (not provided) if using it for its intended purpose, or brads if using it in paper arts.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment. Don't have it? You can still pay that way using your credit card. Just click on the PayPal icon at checkout and follow the prompts.

Shipping: This item will ship from Bali by Pos Indonesia registered mail with a tracking number. Please note that you will need to sign for it upon delivery. I generally ship more speedily than the 3-5 days stated in my shipping profile but sometimes need a little more leeway if I'm in Bali and its rainy season. I refund on postage overpayments in excess of $1. Please see my shop policies for more shipping info.
Extra info: These pieces are cast and there maybe minor variations depending how they came out of the cast. Some are a little more crudely finished than you might find on something made in your country.

BACK STORY
Just like in India, Balinese Hindus have a caste system - a form of social stratification that can see you in or out of a heirarchy based on heredity.

Unlike in India, caste is not of uppermost importance to the Balinese, though the naming system on the island is a way of instantly recognising caste.

The name Dewa is given to Balinese boys born into the Wesya caste that would traditionally have included overseers and minor aristocracy.

Most Balinese are born into what would be called the "sudra" caste in India - the farmers in what has traditionally been an agrarian society down the centuries.

There are no special names for those born into this caste. Instead, they use names that designate birth order.

Wayan and Putu are among the most common names that you'll hear in Bali for they are the names given to first born children of either sex in this caste. Gede is also a name given to a first born boy and Ni Luh or Iluh are names for a first born girl.

Made, Kadek, or Nengah are names given to second born children; Nyoman or Komang to third born; and Ketut to a fourth-born.

These days many Balinese families confine themselves to one, two or maybe three children. In the event there are five or more children, the names are recycled.

So a fifth child would be called Wayan or Wayan Balik - Wayan Again! It's such a common name that I know couples who are Wayan and Wayan.

It's just one of the mysterious and sometimes amusing features of the intricately-woven social fabric of this magical place.
