premium long staple white merino wool, 21-22 microns from Mendenhall Wool Ranch in CA, blended with silk. 80% merino, 20% silk. This is the most beautiful merino fleece I have seen, a jacketed fleece produced specifically for handspinners by Terry Mendenhall, who has been breeding merinos for several decades to create fleeces with longer staples and less grease. The roving was blended at Dakota Fiber Mill and left as a fatter roving to make it easier for you to handle and dye yourself, but we are also selling it as a dyed roving. This listing is for 4 ounces of undyed roving. I am glad to dye it for you in the colors of your choice for an additional amount. This will be next-to-skin soft but is not in the category of super or ultrafine. It should be less prone to felting in a dye process. The staple length is 3-4", almost twice what is commonly seen with merino. Although I cannot claim at this time that it will be more pill-resistant, from a theoretical point of view, it should be less prone to pilling in a finished product.
The shipping prices are slightly higher for roving than yarn by weight because I ship in a box and not a poly mailer so your lovely lofty spinning fiber will not be smashed. We want you to be 100% satisfied.
We are excited to be bringing you premium fleece from small producers. All animal fibers in this blend are US source.
I love US grown merino. This stuff is super soft and spins like butter through my hands. Thank you for the fast shipping too!
