This furoshiki is based on a work by contemporary woodblock print artist Masao Ido that features the Togetsukyo Bridge in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto.
Furoshiki are traditional Japanese wrapping cloths. This one's about 48cm x 48cm(18.9" x 18.9") and like my other furoshiki, is high quality 100% cotton.
Mr. Ido was born in 1945 and his prints have become much sought after internationally and are known for their subtle colors and simple forms. His traditional scenes convey a feeling of peace and tranquility and command high prices.
When I saw his beautifully done work, the sense of harmony with nature that it evoked soothed me and I knew I wanted to share it. So I was very pleased when I got permission to offer some here. I have other Masao Ido furoshiki in this size and a larger size in various designs listed separately.
Please note that this is not an original print, it is not rendered on paper, it is not hand signed and numbered, nor is it a limited edition, as a collectible print is. If you are looking for a standard print as an investment grade collectible, this is not what you're after.
This is a cotton furoshiki cloth, that Mr. Ido has approved and licensed. It lives up to his high standards in both the quality of the cotton, which has a good weight to it and a rich texture, and the superior craftsmanship in the printing, which lives up to the care he takes in his attention to detail in his work.
There's a distinct warmth and depth to this that honors the spirit of his prints and at the same time brings something additional to it; there's a real pleasure in being able to hold and touch such a well made piece without worry in regard to its condition, unlike with a standard print on paper. It adds a tactile dimension that brings it closer and makes it feel even more intimate.
It can of course be used as a furoshiki cloth to wrap a small gift, though its petite size makes it best in this regard for smaller items, allowing for enough room to tie it. This motif would make it ideal for home decor or quilting projects, too! You can also frame it as you would a paper print.

Beautiful print, VERY thin cotton. Definitely not the quality I have received from Japan, of vintage cloths of this nature. Definitely not what I was expecting, but pretty non the less.
