Item details

Looking like little watercolours, these beautiful Urmila dusty pink 18mm dyed bone buttons have a lovely, warm, natural feel to them and are a joy to work with.

Because the dye has taken with different degrees of intensity to each button, they're sure to coordinate beautifully with a range of projects, whether they be knits, garments, accessories, button jewelry or paper crafts.

They're hand crafted in Bali and there may be very slight differences in the thickness and hole placement of each button.

Bali is predominantly Hindu and I named these buttons for Urmila, the wife of Laksamana, a hero of the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana.

PAYPAL is my preferred method of payment.

In Hindu folklore, Laksamana is an invincible warrior who is renowned for his loyalty and devotion to his elder brother Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, or Wisnu as he's known in Bali.

Ever his brother's keeper, Laksamana even agrees to go into exile in the forest with Rama and his wife Sita when Rama is banished from the kingdom of Ayodhya for 14 years.

Purported to be very beautiful and a great painter, Urmila remained a faithful wife to Laksamana for the 14 years of Rama's exile.

The exile story is brought to life in the popular Balinese dance, the Kecak, also known as the Monkey Dance.

“These arms of mine, which are fit for wearing sandalwood pulp and armlets, distributing wealth in charity, and protecting friends and family, shall today, O Rama, be used to do whatever is necessary to stop those who wish to obstruct Your installation as king.” ~ Laksmana speaking to Lord Rama, from the Hindu epic, the Ramayana.
