Poor little teacup, nobody loved you; indeed I don’t think anyone even saw you knocking around in the bottom of that great big bin with the scarves and the toys and the small electronics. Even if they did see you, they were probably instantly put off by the collection of mouse turds crusted in your bottom, and the little chip in your side. But these things were not your fault, they did not effect what you are; they were only circumstances of your ill treatment at the hands of others who did not see in you the personality that I saw. I saw you and I loved you despite the mouse turds: I knew they would wash out easily. Indeed, what is all this antibacterial soap we have nowadays for if not to deal with mouse turds?
So I brought you home and soaked you and washed you and set you on a shelf with other curiosities for companionship. But you stayed in my mind. You wanted a purpose; what would it be? I had dug and dug through that bin for your saucer, but alas, it was not there. Alone now, you wanted a new purpose; but what could it be?
For the next few days, I carried you with me, nestled in the back of my mind as I looked around and took in the sights and sounds and ideas. Then I saw it. On a shelf in a store a lesser example of what you could be: a pincushion. Just think of all the companions you would have as a pincushion in a sewing room! So I pulled out my box of purple scraps and searched out the lace left over from my wedding dress. I even found that itty bitty little purple button, having quite forgotten I had it. So here we are with the new you.
Like a stray kitten, however, I love you but I cannot keep you. So, washed and brushed, with a new bright ribbon around your neck, I send you off. Fear not, though, little teacup; the bins at the depot are long in your past. Someone will see you and love you and have use for you, and then you will have a new home. But until that time, you may stay in my sewing room and survey the goings on, so that you may know what you are getting into.
