Item details

Gulf Coast Native Sheep as they are called have many other pseudonyms, such as Pineywoods Sheep, Scrub Sheep, Woods Sheep. These additional names help to describ the environment that the sheep is best at home in. Thought to be decendents of Merinos brought to North America by the Spanish, perhaps shipwrecked on the coastal shores. This breed is one of the oldest in North America, and considered a primitive or unimproved breed it is grouped in the Feral family of sheep.

These exceptional raw locks are a from Mississippi along the Gulf Coast, and the breed of sheep is considered a Critical Conservation Breed.

The washed fleece shown in the fourth and fifth photos are my whimsy at what I thought of as soon as I saw the locks washed up. Lemon Meringue pie! The fleece does show canary staining which caused by a combination of genetics and weather; it will not wash out and is the most common cause of yellowed fleece. I would not endeavor to bleach this stain, but accept it as part of the character of the fleece. It can make a pleasant warm base to fiber that is being dyed.

Staple length is about 3 to 5 inches and 26 to 32 microns.

A rare opportunity indeed, for such a dwindling breed.

Truly a spinners delight!

Offered in 1 oz. portions.

Please see my store policy on **actual shipping charges only**. For multiple items there is likely to be an overage from calculated to actual shipping. I will happily refund any amounts in excess of $2.00 over actual. Please convo me prior to purchase if you wish for an estimate or separate listing.

Finally received my package! I think Canada Post Customs felt they should have charged something but realized the items came from Canada... That's the only excuse I have for the hold up. But what a wonderful package, as usual. I'm super happy.

The owner to this shop is super nice. We unfortunatly had a shipping snafu ( totally the postal systems falt) and the package was lost. She sent me the order over again for no extra cost. Thank -you!

Additional policies

Given the wide variation in shipping costs, I have the high end listed as a safeguard for my costs. If for example someone were to purchase 2 ounces of fleece the shipping cost would be representative of actual. If someone purchased 12 ounces of fleece the shipping cost would likely be too high. For any shipping overages of $2 or more than the actual shipping cost, I will happily refund the difference, and have done so for any applicable sales.
Please convo me if you wish to have a custom listing set up for specific purchases and possible combined shipping costs.
