This tenugui features four fish, all the same species, a yellow tail or Japanese amberjack, at different stages of growth. In the Japanese language, clear distinction is made between the various stages, with different names used for each.
This design carries with it wishes for growth, promotion and prosperity at work and in other areas of life, in the same sense that the yellowtail as the mature fish is known grows.
It's printed with care on quality, 100% cotton and is about 90cm x 36cm(35.43" x 14.17").
Tenugui are traditional Japanese cotton cloths. They were originally used as hand towels and head bands, but are used today mainly as room accents and come in a huge variety of motifs. These would make striking room accents, in projects, or on a wall or a table and would look great framed.
This one's part of a selection I'm offering by Kenema, a company that strives to create dynamic designs that evoke traditional motifs and culture infused with a modern flair.
If you've purchased my furoshiki wrapping cloths, please note that tenugui cotton is a plain weave that is lighter that the fabric used for most of my furoshiki, and it is flat, with a plain texture, more similar to the sort of fabric used for bandanas, so it might not be as suitable for some fabric projects. And unlike my furoshiki, tenugui are not finished at the ends, threads are left loose.
Because the ends are not sewn, the horizontal threads(the woof may fray a bit as it's used. If you wash your tenugui, I recommend hand washing for at least the first few times. The raw ends of tenugui will gradually tighten after being washed a few times.
This one and others that note 'cotton gauze' in the listing title are also great for use as head coverings, as the gauze is breathable and absorbs perspiration well. It's also fast drying and durable and gets softer and softer with use. If there's a Japanese festival near you and you plan to take part, these are just the way to get into the spirit!
And even if you don't have such a chance, these cotton gauze tenugui are a great alternative to a bandana when you're playing tennis, hiking, cycling, doing yard work, etc.
Around the house, they work wonderfully as material if you're making room accents, whether on the wall or as table runners and place mats.
