Item details

This charming, chubby Bali Buddha artisan-carved bone bead would make a superb guru bead in a mala.

The bead is carved all the way around with a hole drilled head to toe as can be seen in my photos.

The Buddha is clad in a little robe that exposes his belly.

These beads were crafted for Indounik by a master carver in Bali, Indonesia.

Each bead is ever so slightly different from the other, and Buddha may sometimes be a little thinner, or a little taller than the one shown in my stock photos. The differences are in mere millimeters, and the piece you purchase will be much the same as you see here.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment. Don't have it? You can still pay that way using your credit card. Just click on the PayPal icon at checkout and follow the prompts.

BACK STORY
Malas are used by followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, and some other religions, and by practitioners of meditation when reciting mantras or prayers.

Mantras are repeated hundreds and sometimes thousands of times and one bead of a mala represents one recitation of a mantra.

Malas traditionally have 27, 54, or 108 beads of similar size and shape, and then one extra bead - the guru bead or mother bead - a reminder of the bond between teacher and student.

Reciting of mantras begins with a bead next to the guru bead, with the thumb flicking to the next bead when a new mantra begins. This follows around the necklace or wrist mala until the guru bead is reached again.

However, the guru bead is never crossed in this process. Instead, the devotee will turn the mala around and count back the other way.

Malas originated in the Hindu religion. Bali is the biggest Hindu outpost outside of India but it's a hybrid form of the religion that incorporates elements of Buddhism, animism, and even Chinese Confucianism.

This religion is practised by more than 90 percent of Balinese as well as some residents of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Lombok, the little island to Bali's east. Together they represent only about 3 per cent of the population of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation state.

For Hindus. including the Balinese, Buddha is regarded as one of the 10 avatars of God Vishnu.
