Some pieces may need to be joined before cutting fabric. All pieces are clearly marked.
Sized to an AG doll measuring 11" at the chest and 10 3/8" at the waist.
This dress pattern has been designed from an original plate of a full sized women's gown. The dresses shown in the photos are made with satin. The original dress was cut from fine velvet. This is a great historical piece for any collector's wardrobe.
The bodice has 6 sections that contour to the torso. There is a high standing collar. The dress opens and closes in the front. We used snap tape for closure on our fine satin. Heavier fabrics could be finished with hook and loop fastener. The center front is decorated with small white buttons.
The sleeves have an upper and an under sleeve. This creates seams to the sides of the arm rather than our modern underarm seam. The 3/4 length sleeves are finished around the cuffs with either lace or trim.
The dress skirt has one front panel, two side panels plus a skirt back. The top of the skirt rises just to the hips where it joins the bodice. The front is decorated with three rows of ruffled fabric and two rows of braid trim. This process is not complicated, but note that it does take extra time to put all the trim on the dress skirt. The skirt back has a ruffled fabric trim that flows into a long train. There is an over-skirt that gathers at the waistline and also has a ruffled fabric trim on the lower edge.
To complete the dress, there is a pleated front skirt trimmed with fringe that joins to the back bustle. Each side has bustling that is hand sewn. It sews to the back bustle on the left side of the pleated front. The back bustle features crumb catcher pleats along each side. It is box pleated by hand at the waist then decorated with braid trim. The bustle is gathered at several points to create the puffy appearance of the bustle. The bustle is detachable and attaches to the dress with metal snaps.
Under the dress is a white cotton petticoat designed specifically for this dress. It has a front piece with darts to narrow the waist length. Ruffles on the lower edge are trimmed with lace. It closes on the left side with either hook and loop or a button and buttonhole. There is an optional back over-petticoat. It attaches to the petticoat with hook and loop fastener at the waist band. The lower edge is finished with ruffles and lace. On each of the sides are two buttonholes. Buttons are sewn to the petticoat to hold the over-petticoat in place. The over-petticoat gives extra pouf to the dress.
This is not a beginner project. It is not complicated but is time intensive with lots of hand sewing. The small bodice pieces require careful stitching but if you have some experience this should be a relatively easy dress to sew together. Instructions include illustrations.
