Item details

Behold the mandrake, a peculiar plant of arcane origins. Many mandrakes spend their lives in mystical servitude, being fed the milk of a cow and swaddled in a dead man's shroud to bring magical might to their master. Others sprout at the feet of the hanged on the spot where the deceased's essence has fertilised the soil. Any man who tries to root up the botanical blight drops dead as it emits its piercing shriek. This particular mandrake, however, has a more modest background and can most often be found pottering around an old greenhouse in Yorkshire, trying to flirt with onions and digging up worms.

This toy stands at just shy of 30cm tall (including leaves) and does not require knowledge of complex stitches.

This is a PDF crochet pattern which will instruct you in making your own mandrake toy. The pattern is written in full with additional shorthand instructions presented in the appendix for clarity. You will need DK weight yarn in green and light, pale brown along with stuffing and safety eyes (12mm recommended).

Crochet hooks: 3mm (US Size C/D) and 4mm (US Size 6)

Very cute, easy to follow pattern. I couldn't get it to print without some of the instructions overlapping but I was still able to read and complete.

I think the picture of the mandrake is absolutely adorable and the pattern is well laid out. However I found the eyebrows very difficult to understand. Tip for anyone struggling with eyebrows! - I used the same technique for the mouth as for the eyebrows. When I did it this way it looked like the picture. I found the hook size too small for the saplings and leaves so made some alterations here too. Same for the bend in the legs. I'm pleased with how it turned out, but I think the pattern works best for crocheters with experience so they can alter and adapt to any difficult parts.
