This beautiful pincushion is made of felted wool with hand embroidered wool applique in the traditional penny rug style. It features a primitive yellow green 5 pointed star, each point accented with a black running stitch in pearl cotton. The side is also embellished with a 7/8 " strip of yellow green wool accented with the same black running stitch. It is filled with crushed walnut shells to keep pins and needles sharp and clean. This makes a wonderful addition to your sewing room, or simply use as a colorful art piece to wow your friends.
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They became small samples of decorative needlework to be displayed on top of tables, dressers, and beds. I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. In my explorations of the medium I have experimented with various weights of wool, including felt, roving, fleece, and woven wools as well and I continue to explore hand dying. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
