This beautiful pincushion is made of felted wool in the traditional penny rug style. It features a primitive pink and yellow flower with black french knots hand-embroidered in the flower's center surrounded by appliqued green foliage. All nicely detailed with pearl cotton. It is filled with crushed walnut shells to keep pins and needles sharp and clean. Guaranteed to be a hit with your favorite sewer or quilter, and infinitely useful as well as decorative. Oversized, it is meant for a serious sewer or someone who wants to dress up their sewing table!
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They became small samples of decorative needlework to be displayed on top of tables, dressers, and beds. I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. In my explorations of the medium I have experimented with various weights of wool, including felt, roving, fleece, and woven wools as well and I continue to explore hand dying. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
