Tea tree oil, or Melaleuca oil, is a nearly colorless (sometimes a very pale yellow) essential oil that comes from steaming and distilling the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. Ours specifically comes from Australia, and has a fresh, camphor-like scent. Tea tree oil has been used medicinally since the 1920′s and is said to have many antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic qualities. Although research on tea tree oil has only been conducted somewhat recently, tea tree oil has been used for centuries by the Aboriginal people.
When being used on humans, tea tree oil is generally applied topically and is used to treat common ailments such as canker sores, acne, athlete’s foot and even lice.
Traditional Tea Tree OIl Uses: -Use a small amount to treat acne. If it causes your skin to dry out, try mixing with a small amount of carrier oil such as coconut oil. -Antiseptic for cuts and burns. -Use a few drops in a bath or humidifier to help with congestion and treat symptoms of the flu and colds. -Add a small amount to shampoo to treat dandruff and head lice. -Add a few drops to bath water to help with body odor. -Dab directly onto insect bites to help reduce itching. -Helps treat and heal fungal nail infections.
Household Uses: -Mix 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water for a disinfecting all-purpose cleaner. -Using the above mixture, add kosher salt or baking soda as a bathroom scrub or for cleaning tiles. -Add a few drops to your laundry load to leave your laundry smelling cleaner. -For those of you that may cloth diaper, tea tree oil is a great disinfectant and can even help kill yeast and prevent diaper rashes. -Dilute with water to kill household mold and mildew.
Tea tree oil finds a variety of other uses, including in the treatment of aquarium fish. It is most commonly used to promote fin and tissue regrowth, but is also effective in treating other conditions, such as fin rot or velvet. The remedy is used mostly on betta fish, but can also be used with other aquarium fish, other than goldfish.
According to the American Cancer Society: “Tea tree oil is toxic when swallowed. It has been reported to cause drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, unsteadiness, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, blood cell abnormalities, and severe rashes. It should be kept away from pets and children.”
