Item details

These local treasures have become a big hit around the world. The hand-painted nuts will last for decades and make wonderful chunky jewelry. They can also be used to make your own custom lei, short lei, haku, wristlets and anklets for hula. Through Hawaiian Handmade Creations, you can get any combination of colors your heart desires, you're not restricted to ten of one color!

Kukui is also known as Candlenut, Lumbang, Tutui and Kemiri. Kukui is NOT the same as Buri Nut. Please note that these are naturally occurring nuts, collected then sanded, polished, drilled and painted by hand. No two are identical in size or shape or luster, there may be slight scratching, and the holes may vary somewhat. All of this is true of any commercially available kukui nuts. Please also note that the pattern may vary somewhat from pictures and color vary from batch to batch.

The "Number of Kukui" drop down indicates how many kukui are in each package, the "Quantity" dropdown indicates how many packages you'd like of that number. PLEASE LET ME KNOW which colors you'd like and how many of each color in the note to seller. If you tell me how many but not which colors, I will send a random assortment.

For example: if you'd like 20 nuts, choose Number of Kukui: 10; Quantity: 2

Size: Most are 25x28mm tall by 22-25mm wide, though some are as small as 18x20mm

Hole: The holes are 3-5mm

The kukui is Hawaii's state tree because of it's multitude of uses, it is native to Polynesia and now cultivated all over the world in tropical climates. The kukui was used extensively by ancient Hawaiians and is still used by us today in many of these ways. The nuts were burned as candles, giving them the English name candlenuts, the oil burned in stone lamps called kukui hele po. The nuts can be eaten and when roasted and pounded with salt make 'inamona, a key ingredient in traditionally flavored poke! The oil, sap, flower, bark and nuts were all used as medicinal ingredients in traditional remedies, some of which, are still used and passed on today. Hawaiians also had many other uses for the tree, as a dye for kapa and tattos, varnish, net preservative, wood for canoes, canoe parts and paddles, children's toys and of course, LEI!

Disclosure of Foreign Origin:
In compliance with 19USC.SEC.130(E) you should be notified that nearly all kukui nuts for sale commercially whether painted, natural, rough, shiny or hand-painted with a design are "Designed in Hawaii and Hand Made in the Philippines" (where they are known as lumbang). My source is an awesome Filipino family with direct connections back to their suppliers in Philippines.

CUSTOM ORDERS: Please contact me about custom orders. I would love to talk to you about them, but do not guarantee that I will be able to take on the custom order- it all depends on what you want, how soon, what you're looking to pay and whether I will have the time to get the job done right and within your time frame. I'll only take the order if I can be sure that you'll be satisfied with my work.

• Each listing will specify the materials used. I will do my best to give gemstone specifications (such as if they are dyed, heated, irradiated or man-made).
• Ear wires may be solid copper, sterling silver filled or gold filled, they will never be plated or nickel. If you need sterling or gold ear wires specifically or would prefer solid sterling silver wires to sterling or gold filled ear wires, please see the upgrade section of the shop, I am more than happy to replace the ear wires "at price" for you (you only pay what the upgraded findings cost to upgrade the pieces).
• I try to keep my prices low and will use gold filled and sterling silver filled metals when possible. Findings (not ear wires) may be silver, copper, gold or brass plated.
• Gold-filled by law contains 1/20th gold content by weight, which is 50-100,000 times more gold than gold-plated. It should have no problems if properly cared for
• Sterling Silver-filled by law contains 1/10th silver content by weight, which is 50-100,000 times more silver than silver-plated. It should have not problems if properly cared for.
• All precious metals used in this shop are provided by a USA-based supplier. GF in the USA must be 1/20th gold content, and SSF must be 1/10th silver content, however not all countries are as stringent in their requirements.

CARING FOR YOUR JEWELRY: There are many great resources on how to care for your jewelry, just do a simple web search. It is not recommended to wear your jewelry in the bath or to bed; never wear your jewelry in the pool, ocean or otherwise in contact with chemicals; direct sunlight or heat can fade some gems; when necessary, clean with a soft, untreated cloth and water only (dry cloth for opals); always store your jewelry out of direct contact with other jewelry, away from any heat sources, and if possible in a jewelry box. Some wood and paper beads are not color fast and should be kept dry at all times.

CHILDREN: If any of my jewelry is given to children under 13 years of age, please ensure that they wear it only when supervised. Some pieces may have or be small parts. To the best of my knowledge, my jewelry is lead free (I do not use lead in any part of my jewelry making processes). However, it is possible for sterling silver from recycled sources to contain lead.
