A purple martin is unusual among birds that use nest boxes. Several pairs will nest in a single box with multiple compartments.
The checkerboard house design was inspired by a birdhouse my husband handcrafted. It was made to be used mainly as a decorative piece. When it was placed on a post outside in the garden, to our amazement we saw bluebirds flying in and out. They had nested in it.
You'll enjoy stitching these bird houses as you dream of the season of warm sunshine and nesting birds.
Using a variety of simple embroidery stitches, these blocks can easily be stitched by embroiderers of all skill levels (beginner to advanced).
The 3 1/2" X 9 1/2" purple martin house is stitched on a 5" X 11" piece of fabric.
The 3 1/2" X 6 1/2" checkerboard house is stitched on a 5" X 8" piece of fabric.
