1 lot of 10 vintage aqua glass olive shaped beads. They measure approximately 20mm x 15mm but vary slightly in size because they were handmade. I don't have an exact age or place of origin for these beads, but they are similar to some in my collection from early to mid-twentieth century Japan.
They are a nice smooth bead with ribs or grooves pressed in lengthwise from hole to hole. On some of the beads, the grooves are straight and on some they are swirled. I guess this variation is due to them being handmade. You might call these a long melon bead shape.
They have a translucent appearance that I have heard called "greasy" in referring to vintage beads of this type. Others may call them an opal glass or opalescent bead. They are not completely opaque, but definitely not transparent. They still have a little powder left on them from the manufacturing process, but it rubs off very easily.
According to the book - The Illustrated Bead Bible - By Theresa Flores Geary ... "A glass bead made with greasy glass is shallowly translucent and uniformly murky, as if coated with petroleum jelly. The glass has richness and depth and resembles dense opal glass."
These are unused beads. I got these beads directly from the vintage vaults of a famous New York City supplier.
