The rose is known in Norway as Værhornsrosa, or th Ram’s horn rose.
Its clear origins unknown, but knitting stars like this have been found on old textiles and pattern libraries from Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany dating back to the middle ages.
In the dark middle ages, when electricity was still unknown, the stars were loved as symbols of life and energy. Stars were often knitted into pillows and nightgowns, as protecting symbols against the darkness of the night.
For the same reason, stars were also knitted into mittens used in wintertime, as winter was considered the night of the year, and the night represented the dark and the unknown.
The 4 page-pattern includes graphic charts in clear detail
of right hand, left hand, thumb and lace pattern for cuffs.
