This is a unique and scrumptious little piece of hand dyed velvet (8.25" x 10") in black-red. This will make fantastic velvet flowers. I used a special resist technique to achieve the patterns. It is perfect for crazy quilting piecing (with a light interfacing), doll clothes, landscapes, velvet flowers/leaves (see pictured example) or your favorite creative idea! (Google "How to make velvet flowers" for some wonderful little tutorials on how to do this.)
The fabric is a 18% silk and 82% rayon mix giving it a luster that is hard to surpass. Some of my velvets were died using Jacquard silk color dyes and then steaming them to fix the dye. Then I hand washed with gentle Orvus Quilt Soap, rinsed, dried, and ironed them. I recommend you hand wash and do not use bleach. There may be some chance of bleeding so if this is a concern for you, pre-wash it and make sure the water runs clear before using. With most of my recent pieces I used Procion dyes. I rinse them thoroughly until the water runs clear.
If you use it to piece a crazy quilt, I recommend you back it with a light interfacing. Depending on how you cut it you could get about 3 patches with this piece. Whenever you iron velvet, I recommend that you put the pile side face down into a thick towel, cover the back with a pressing cloth, then press lightly. If you iron directly onto the velvet without putting it pile first into a bath towel, you will flatten the pile of the velvet.
I measured the width and length from the center side to side to the nearest ¼ inch. There will be variation across the edges. These are impossible to cut square because of the stretch in the fabric. (-; A light interfacing will give it stabilization if you need that for your project. The stretch makes it perfect for manipulating for landscapes, velvet flowers or leaves, crazy quilting embellishments, or other projects.
Only the velvet is for sale; anything else pictured is a prop or showing what you can make with the velvet.
