Item details

Reproduction Bird's Eye buttons, off- white linen thread around a cotton muslin core. For sale at £12.50 per card of Six x 5/8 inch diameter buttons.

The rear of the buttons are without shanks. Being handmade there may be a very slight variation in diameter. I try to keep them matching as a set.

This style of button was first made and sold commercially by Abraham Case in Dorset, England in the mid 1600s.

First designed for use on children's clothes, they can be used on any items which need frequent washing, such as toddlers clothes, bed linen etc.. They can also be used on English Civil War re-enactment shirts and chemises, as they seem to pre-date the more well-known Dorset Crosswheel button which seems to have been invented around 1700.
