Item details

This listing is for the PATTERN PDF to make the Katniss Cowl and is NOT A FINISHED ITEM.

Once you purchase the pattern, your order confirmation from Etsy will include a link to 2 short videos showing how to do the stitch for the body.

Don't forget to check out my newest Katniss inspired cowl pattern - the District 12 Cowl!

PATTERN ERRATA: Pattern states that size 17 circular or straight may be used when 17 is called for in the pattern, but straight will not work for the top of the cowl portion. Size 17 circular, 24" or longer will be needed for knitting that portion back and forth.

This listing is for the knitting pattern to make my version of the Katniss cowl.

For a seasoned knitter, you can probably make this cowl in just a few days, novice knitters can probably get it done in about a week or so :-)

From the moment I saw the first trailer for Catching Fire I fell in love with the Cowl that Katniss is wearing. This is my version of her cowl, inspired by the rustic warmth, charm and strength of hers, but made with a few changes to make it a little more wearable (and warm!) for every day.

The original garment worn by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie is not a knitted garment, but rather made by hand weaving. I have a nod to this in my version with the hand woven rope detail that you will see where the body splits at the shoulder. This pattern includes instructions for making and placing these braided details. You might be tempted to skip these so you can wear your creation faster, but DON'T. You will be glad you didn't!

The cowl goes farther up than the one shown in the trailer, and ends with the same knitted detail that you see on the body. The side is split to enable you to wear it straight up to block out the cold without it also blocking out your face :-)

Arm opening can be worn on either side as the front and back are the same!

The finishing process is just as important to me as the knitting, and I have also included the tips I have for making the finishing of your garment just a lovely as the knitting :-)

GENERAL SKILLS NEEDED: knitting, knitting in the round, picking up and knitting stitches, increasing and decreasing.
I think this pattern is suitable for many skill levels, including an adventurous newby knitter.

Pattern written to make 2 sizes: S/M and M/L

S/M is shown in the photos, and is about 40-42" around at the bottom of the body (where it runs from the shoulder, down the front, under the arm/across the waist and up the back to the same shoulder).

M/L is about 42-44" around this same portion.

The bottom of the cowl/shoulder area on each size has approximately the same measurement that is given for the bottom of the body of each size (S/M = 40-42" and M/L = 42-44")

This can be worn with either arm through the sling - the front and back are identical. Just by flipping it around, you can have the neck slit and the arm opening reversed :-)

BASIC MATERIALS: about 300-350 yards of bulky or super bulky yarn
size 17 and size 13 needles

Okay, it's a little more complicated than I anticipated so I've signed up for a knitting class! Overall, I think the instructions look great and I appreciate the photos. Can't wait to enjoy the finished product.
