Threads Magazine #4 from April/May 1986
This interesting magazine contains a wealth of information. This issue is OOP, and is a duplicate from my collection. I discovered Threads late - when I began subscribing, it had been in publication for years, and I wanted to see everything I missed. If I am reading correctly, at Threads Magazine dot com - every issue below #96 is out of print - that is as of November 2013. In attempting to have every issue #1 to present (I think it's #179), I sometimes needed to purchase a group of several in order to get the one magazine I have been looking for. That might seem like a total waste of time, but I very recently discovered I have every single issue!! I will have to turn my obsessive compulsive hoarding in another direction!!
A word about the photographs. They show the front cover, the back cover, a photo of any damage I have noticed, and the storage I use so that you can be assured your magazine will be clean and protected - first, the magazine as stored in a zipper top bag, and second, the magazine in the zipper top bag stored in a plastic magazine rack. Have I mentioned I am ever so slightly obsessive and compulsive?? That works to the buyer's benefit in this instance. Because this issue is one of the earlier Threads magazines, the size is 9” x 12”, which does not completely fit into a gallon size zip top bag. I have created a “pieced” plastic covering, a zipper top bag plus a short portion of a second bag… this is a temporary solution I have come up with to make sure the magazine arrives at your doorstep in the best possible condition. Once you have received it, feel free to dispose of this bag.
A note to individuals who have never seen a Threads magazine. Threads first issue was, I believe, the December 1985 / January 1986 issue. The current Threads is large by today’s standards, 9" x 11" - although the first 26 issues were slightly taller, at 9" x 12". Threads magazine is not simply a sewing magazine, it covers a variety of things, including but not limited to sewing, tailoring, knitting, crochet, felting, heirloom, weaving on a loom - even shoemaking!! Each issue is a unique and unexpected treasure trove of information. I highly recommend you purchase one issue. You will quickly know if this is a magazine you would like to see more of. Some of the more recent back issues are available at Taunton Press, the manufacturer of numerous fine magazines covering many subjects. By far the most available source of back issues, though, would be here on Etsy, at an online auction, occasionally at a thrift store.... It is possible to purchase a DVD with the entire collection years 1985 - 2013, available on Threadsmagazine.com for about $100 as of November, 2013. My personal preference is to hold an issue in my hands, and when I need an OOP issue, I always check Etsy first.
The condition of this magazine is very good. The back cover has a half inch of damage as shown in photograph 3. In this issue: Hot Air Balloons (how is that for a weekend project?) ---- Making an open weave basket ---- All about knitting needles ----Sewing with Silk ---- Machine knitting ---- Making a Great Shirt Collar ---- Mastering the Art of Hand Applique ---- Easy Striped Knits ---- Doup Leno (fabric made on a four harness table loom) ---- Limited Editions Vests - an article about screen printing on fabric. If you wonder what a 27 year old magazine can teach you, remember that Threads magazine has never been a follower of fads. Although the information was current when it was printed, it also translates to today. For example, the article "Sewing with Silk" is timeless information.
