This is the Spring / Summer 1957 issue of McCall’s Needlework & Crafts Magazine. There are pages of instructions and patterns for an array of crafts, including knitting, tatting, crochet, stenciling, rug making, weaving, sewing, mosaics, trapunto (what the heck is that!?), furniture making, and more. Patterns include ones for making aprons, clothing, doll clothes, toys and so on. If you are into retro fashion, this is the magazine for you.
How about an article and instructions for making “pert or pretty hats”? There are patterns for hats “for Easter, summer weddings, or high teas…for oh’s and ah’s.” Or a “Bonny beret with the new deep crown to set foursquare on the brow.”
The overriding theme of this magazine’s ads is “making money at home”. Need to make a little extra money? “$40 is yours for selling only 50 boxes of greeting cards…some folks made $500 to $1,000 last year selling cards!” Holy cats! That calc’s out to selling 1,250 boxes of cards to earn $1K. Seems like an awful lot of work for the money, even in 1957 dollars.
The advertisements alone are worth the price of the magazine, and they are in frameable condition. It’s so much fun reading about what interested the “modern woman” in 1957!
While this magazine does not look new and has been read, it still is in good vintage condition. There is a ½” tear in the bottom left of the cover, but no missing or damaged pages and no underlining or highlighting of text or writing in the margins.
• 112 pages and measures 10 ½” x 14” • Item #415

To most vintage buyers / collectors, imperfections are part of the charm of vintage pieces, infusing them with a spirit of the past. Because of this, all my items are sold “AS IS” and all sales are final unless I gravely misrepresent the piece in my description.
My goal is to make you happy so that you will become a regular customer and recommend my shop to others. If you have any concerns or problems, please let me know so that we can reach a mutually happy ending.
