These cards depict illustrations for Byliny - traditional Russian oral epic narrative folklore poems. The gorgeous illustrations were created by Palekh artists.
(Palekh miniature is a Russian folk handicraft of miniature painting, which is done with tempera paints on varnished articles made of papier-mâché. Palekh Russian lacquer art on papier-mâché first appeared in 1923 in the village of Palekh, located in the district of Ivanovo Oblast, and is based on a long local history of icon painting. Works by Palekh masters are kept in numerous museums of Russia and abroad.)
Each card has the name of the artist on the back, and the extract from the Byliny the illustration refers to (all text is in Russian.)
These postcards measures around 10cm by 15cm (4" by 6" inches.)
