The story behind Sky Hare

Skyhare is one of the designs I created back in 2006 for a range of sand cast jewellery. I did a few castings of it and may still do more some day, but meanwhile I cannot wait to see what other artisans and craftsmen will do with it.

Skyhare is named so because if you flip the image over, you will find one of my favourite constellations, called Otava in Finnish, known to you English speaking lot as the Big Dipper. If you can recognise this constellation, you will always know where north is. In addition you may find the spiral representing the sun and the moon hidden in the image.

Skyhare was dedicated to the public domain as a gesture of thanks to all the arts in the public domain that have inspired me to create my designs and metalwork. I ended up doing research into the Public Domain to find out that each year more images are being appropriated from it and no new images are entering it for some years to come, thanks to the recent extention of copyrights. So I decided that at least one of my original designs should be made available to everyone during my lifetime. Maybe one day I shall see it somewhere and know I was part of it.
