Handmade Embroidered Pincushion - Little Lambs Eat Ivy

The size of this little pincushion is 6.5" long x 2" wide and 1.5" in depth

Do you ever wonder what Minnesotans do on those long frigid winter nights? I can speak only for myself - but I spend hours most evenings with my feet up, a light over my shoulder, doing handwork. This small but adorable pincushion is the result of 5 or 6 evenings doing embroidery until my fingers ache. But I think the results were worth my efforts, I hope you will agree.

This pincushion began as two pieces of fabric, both lined with a layer of poly batting - a rose and ivory striped decorator fabric, and an ivory toile print, with pink design on the ivory fabric. You will have to look very closely to see the pink print, because I over embroidered it - I have a tendency to over do things. This was a very simple scene - a ewe, a lamb, some grass at their feet and an overhanging branch with leaves. With hours of hand work, I added two styles of pastel flowering shrubs on the left side and a wonderful tree on the right side with a multitude of leaves in shades of blue. Finally the ewe and her lamb - the black embroidery floss shows the shape of their faces, ears and legs. Their bodies are made up with dozens and dozens of ivory colored french knots. The entire pincushion was hand embroidered in pastel shades of green and blue, with the "flowers" on the shrubs in rose - to match the back of the pincushion. The entire time I worked on this pincushion, a novelty song composed in 1943 was on a loop inside my head. For the record, 1943 was long before I was born. The name of the song is "Mairzy Doats", but if I type the words phonetically, it says "Mares eat oats and Does eat oats and Little Lambs eat ivy.... a kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you". So there was no other name I could give it! Machine stitched on three sides, firmly stuffed with poly fiberfill, then the fourth side hand stitched.
