The Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a Butterfly Host Plant for the Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly, now threatened in several states. This Native Plant has so many virtues -- Flower, Fragrance, Fruit, and Fantastic Butterflies!!
A bit of plant culture...
Blooms in the spring are fragrant, small and white and make a great Nectar plant for Honey Bees. The fruits are berry-like and black when ripe. The common name for the plant is from the black color of the ripened fruits.
In Mexico and the Southwest, the fruit is called Capulin, which is larger in that region than in others. In American Colonial Times, the Wild Black Cherry was called Rum Cherry Capulin because it was used extensively as a source for making rum.
Wild Black Cherry is naturally occurring in eastern North America, but has naturalized across most of the US. Forest stands are documented from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec, Canada, Minnesota and North Dakota, southward to Florida and east Texas, with outlying populations in central Texas, west Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and south in Mexico to Guatemala. A mature tree may reach 110 feet tall in the northern ranges, but most of the Wild Black Cherry trees seldom grow taller than half of that in the Southeast and Texas.
The Wild Cherry Tree is often used for Restoration or Re-forestation due to the fast growth and commercial value of the wood. Few mature stands exist now because of over-logging and the reduction of associated habitats. These trees have been recorded to grow more than 250 years, although most often the life span averages 90 years.
This Wild Cherry Tree makes an excellent landscape plant for the residential and wildlife garden. It is a shade-tolerant species and most often occurs in the edge of denser forests. Black cherry fruits are important food for numerous species of passerine birds, game birds, and mammals, including the red fox, black bear, raccoon, opossum, squirrels, and rabbits...our Roadrunners are particularly fond of it!
Pitted fruit is edible and often eaten raw or stewed into jams and jellies. The fruit is used to flavor 'Cherry Bounce' which is a mixed liquor of rum and brandy. A tea can be made of dried foliage and berries and has been an important herb to the American Indian for centuries.

Shipping & policies
We ship in the Order of Paid Invoices...and while our goal is prompt shipment of all orders. However shipping delays can occur during period of High Sales (Spring Planting and Christmas) or due to periods of Severe Weather. We routinely do not ship some plants during the Heat of August. If in doubt as to the specific shipping date of the items you purchased, please send us a note!...
We welcome your messages or special requests. We attempt to respond to all messages promptly...sometimes, the response requires a bit of time to research.
Our Growing Philosophy....We propagate through seedlings, cuttings, and division of well-established plants. We do not use chemicals and allow the plant to establish root systems naturally. This may - or may not - create a smaller plant or a longer growing period than the 'Treated with Nitrogen' plants visible at Big Box Stores.
We do not grow hundreds of any one plant, but prefer to grow hundreds of different plants instead...Numbers of plants are often limited.
We offer many native varieties because we like them and strongly believe that the Heritage of Natives should be retained. We Never collect them from the wild. We grow them from cuttings or seeds from our own Garden and Property.
We ship with excess soil removed from the root system. The roots are wrapped in dampened materials and securely encased in plastic. Each plant is labeled as to the common and botanical names. We ship USPS. We have been using this method for more than 30 years and have found it to be highly reliable...
We routinely ship Plant Materials within the Continental USA. Alaska, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands require additional shipping costs...and we will create a Designated Listing for your additional shipping and handling costs.
We can not replace or refund Plant, Seed or Cutting material that has been confiscated by a governmental agency...regardless of the reason. We can no longer maintain current information on State Regulations for Live Plant Shipment. It is the Buyer's Responsibility to know when a plant is considered "non-shippable" into their state.
Due to USDA regulations, we ship no plants, seeds, or cuttings to Hawaii.
You do not have to be home to receive your package as we do not require signatures. Neither do we mark the boxes with the contents because this gives the US Postal Service the option of non-delivery if no-one is home.
As soon as the plants have been packed and shipped, the buyer is provided with the Label or Tracking Number. we do follow tracking on our shipped items and consider the sale complete when the Tracking Information indicates the package/box was delivered safely by USPS.
Each Plant Sale is unique for us! Each is hand-inspected and hand-packed for shipment. We do not 'anticipate' shipping or purchase the Shipping Label in advance of Shipment. We carry each box to the United States Post Office for shipment to ensure prompt scanning and shipment...and routinely make trips to the Belton Post Office three days a week.
