Included with the pattern is a document containing a DMC floss color chart as well as any other relevant information about working the pattern. I am including both a black and white symbol chart and a full-color chart which shows where outline stitches are to be worked.
Early in Ann Radcliffe’s “The Mysteries of Udolpho”, the heroine Emily loses her mother to illness, leaving her and her father alone. Though understandably upset for some time, Mrs. Radcliffe describes Emily’s healing process thusly: “But what reason and effort may fail to do, time effects. Week after week passed away, and each, as it passed, stole something from the harshness of her affliction, till it was mellowed to that tenderness which the feeling heart cherishes as sacred.”
In thinking about this quote, I imagined flowers growing over Emily’s mother’s gravestone as time passed. I decided to portray this with clematis, which is one of my favorite climbing flowers. The colors I have chosen for them are based on standard colors for this flower, but as each flower in my chart is only one color, the stitcher could certainly elect to make the flowers in any color they chose.
The stitched area of this pattern is 133 x 102 stitches. The sample was stitched on 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures about 9 ½” x 7 ¼”. It took about 37 hours to stitch.
