Item details

One of the greatest ways to set off an accessory, or a piece of clothing is with the use of unique buttons.

Along with help from my woodworking son, I created a selection of handmade wooden buttons to add a little pizzaz to some of my knitted accessories. After having a few friends ask me to make them some as well, I decided to list a few in my store.

This particular style button is a larger sized square that measures approximately 1.5". It is made from oak wood, that was was hand cut, hand drilled, sanded, then sprayed front and back with multiple layers of lacquer to help protect it, and give it a nice glossy shine.

This button comes attached to a hand cut piece of vintage fabric or doily, and attached to a card stock button card. Button card designs and patterns vary.

Caring for wooden buttons…

The main concern most people have with wooden buttons, is the possibility that the wood may crack. Though it is impossible to completely eliminate the possibility of cracking wood, you can drastically cut down the chances of that happening, with proper care.

Most cracking is caused by moisture. My suggestion is to always try to avoid submerging any wooden button, especially by tossing it into a washing machine. Even worse would be tossing it into the dryer after it was in the washer. Wooden buttons should not be soaked in water, and should definitely not have harsh chemicals used on them. Doing any of those things more than likely result in cracking at some point in time.

Generally, the wooden buttons available in my shop are sized, created, and sold with the intentions of being used as embellishments on knitted or crocheted projects. Most of those types of accessories (as a general rule) are not machine washed, so using wooden buttons works beautifully.

I recommend gently wiping wooden buttons with a soft cloth, or even a tissue…it can be damp if need be. A bit of oil, wax, or even a bit of furniture polish can help shine up a wooden button and keep it looking beautiful and new for years to come.
