Viola cornuta: Viola tricolor. An old-fashioned favorite from grandmother's garden. Miniature pansy-like flowers that blend together violet, lavender, yellow and some white in each face. Useful in shady areas, beds, borders, interplanted with spring flowering bulbs, containers, rock gardens and as a cut flower. Reseeds. Flowers are edible, and even have medicinal uses.
They will re-bloom in fall if cut back when summer heat slows blooming, and later will reseed itself under favorable conditions. Sow in March or April for spring bloom, and in July for fall bloom.
