This gorgeous Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is solid, rich color all the way through, and has very little matrix to it. This listing is for hand-selected lots of 20 grams of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Most of the stones in these bags are dime-sized or smaller. Our Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is $5.50 per gram. Each order is for one 20 gram lot. If you have a specific request, please send us a message requesting a custom order. We will try to accommodate your needs within reason. Minimum order for these smaller stones in a custom order is 10 grams. For larger stones see our other listing.
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is some the most beautiful and sought after turquoise in the world. It is now becoming some of the rarest. The world famous Sleeping Beauty Mine, located in Globe, Arizona, is now closed, and the material that is on the market now is all that is available. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is natural turquoise that is stabilized and is able to be cut and polished with very little waste. Most turquoise on the market today is stabilized.
The stabilization process is the standard process used by the Sleeping Beauty Mine for all their stabilized turquoise. Stabilized turquoise is created by adding a clear resin to soft natural turquoise to help enhance the color as well as increase the hardness of the stone. Soft turquoise is usually a lower grade of turquoise as it is too soft to be used on its own for jewelry and must be stabilized with resin. Since turquoise is a very porous substance, the resin fills in the tiny holes and crevices to form a firm stabilized turquoise stone able to be cut and polished.
Most turquoise is treated in some way. Natural untreated turquoise is actually quite rare, as only about three percent of the turquoise sold in the world is mined and sold without anything being added to it. The term treated turquoise is used to mean any turquoise that is stabilized with dyed resin rather than clear. Treated turquoise is usually less expensive than either natural or stabilized turquoise, but it may look artificial in color. The color in treated turquoise typically is not uniform throughout the stone.
Natural turquoise changes color the more it is worn as it reacts with the oils in the skin. Stabilized turquoise, on the other hand, stabilizes, or keeps, the color of the stone the same no matter how much it is worn next to the skin. Stabilized turquoise costs less than natural turquoise, but is still considered beautiful and desirable.
