Item details

I bought this Charka years ago in my quest to learn all there is to learn about spinning. It works well, and was a process that took some time and practice to perfect. Then I realized that I like to use a tahkli/spinning cup better than the Charka. To each their own, I guess.

Historically, this is the invention of Mahatma Ghandi. In his homeland of India, they were fighting to be independent of the British rule. In order to make that happen, Ghandi advised his fellow Indians to make their own clothing. The design of the book charkha make it possible to spin the yarn to make the clothing, yet be hidden away on the bookshelf if authorities came suspecting someone of aiding in the independence movement.

The Charka itself when closed is sized less than a 8 1/2" by 11"(216 x 279 mm) piece of paper. It is made of teak wood and weighs a hefty 2.2 pounds. Each element of the charka has its own spot and when put back into it's appropriate places, closes easily. It comes with a yarn winder (the last photo is not my book charka, but shows the yarn winder attachment) and 3 bobbins. The original bearings for the bobbins was a cotton thread that I've replaced with strips of leather. Remember to keep them well-oiled and it will not burn up like the cotton ones did.

There are videos online to teach how to set up the charkha and use it. I suggest using those as it is difficult to explain how to set up and use a charkha using only words.
