Item details

Who doesn't love chickens? They have a charm to them. When I created this pattern I was exploring 3-D elements which could add interest to a quilt. Here I have cut out arc shapes from two fabrics that had been fused together, and I used them for tail feathers. The fusible I used was Steam-A-Seam because it holds up really well if you send your appliques through the wash. Now I've never washed this quilt, but I used the chickens on a patchwork pair of pants and they have been washed a lot and all the tail feathers held together.

I like to play with different sized designs. This pattern has tiny chicks, assorted eggs (which are really funny in prints) and simple to complex chickens, even a guinea hen. My neighbor at my last house had a flock of guinea hens to eat the ticks on their property. But they were so stupid. They would look up the road and see an eighteen wheeler truck coming and run out into the road. It was kind of like chickens playing Russian roulette.

The triangle strips are paper pieced. That is a really accurate way of getting repeated shapes, exactly the same, every time. Instructions for doing that and the drawing to work from are in the pattern. Of course you can print out the pattern as many times as you need it...this is a PDF pattern.

When it came time to choose the border fabric. I auditioned just about every color that I thought would have a chance to be the right one, and I chose the blue. Why? When I thought about it later, the quilt is generally red, orange and yellow. The opposite color on the color wheel from orange is blue. The color had to be blue. I chose it intuitively, and backed it up with logic.

My quilt in the photo measures 41" x 48". Yours could be any size you like by added more designs from other patterns in our line, or repeating the designs. If you change the colors on the repeated chickens, they will look different. If you have never made a quilt before, or are a beginning quilter, you might benefit from watching our six free videos on our website: I show you all the steps to making a quilt, and all the techniques you need to know to make a machine appliqued quilt.

Etsy has a limit on the size of the file to be downloaded to you. Instead of an instant download, I will send you the download link within 24 hours of your purchase.
