Item details

Horns of My Dilemma is the name I've chosen for this striking carved bone crescent pendant bead.

Double horns or crescent moon are names also used to describe this potent carving.

As you can see from the photos, this 30mm piece is carved both sides with a smooth curved surface, and is not drilled.

Please note that this listing is for one piece only. This carving is also available with a hole drilled either through the middle or to one side, and comes in black and brown horn, and in sustainable sawo wood. You'll find the other listings here

BACK STORY
Mekepung or bull races are held in the west Bali regency of Jembrana from July to October each year.

Madurese migrants introduced the sport to celebrate the end of the rice harvest, and it has become a tourist attraction for one of the least visited regencies on the Island of the Gods.

While I'm not a fan of the use of animals for this type of sport and have never actually seen one of these events, the races are said to be thrilling contests between teams of two young water buffalo harnessed to a chariot.

The chariot is ridden by a jockey who holds onto the bulls' tails as they career down a 2km race course, kicking up dust and sweat.

The water buffalo used in these races are said to be treated with great care, and are fed elaborate diets containing "all sorts of wonderful potions and secret ingredients".

Most of the races happen outside the regency capital of Negara, next to a river estuary in the location of Parancak.
