Now, a little about Venetian and Murano Glass Beads from Italy~~~
The technology of glass bead making is one of the oldest human art forms. Beads have been made of glass for over 5,000 years. The discovery of fire was the essential first step in glass bead making, its evidence as early as 2340-2180 BC in Mesopotamia.
Glass beads have been used in fashion as ornaments, as symbols of power and wealth, as barter for traded goods, and as objects of ritual. In fact, the desirable blue seed bead was used in trade with the Native American people, because aside from gem stones and turquoise, the color blue was rarely available in the decorative native color palette.
Who knows, it may have been a small bag of shiny Blue Beads that purchased the little Island I live on from the original Native Americans....!
The history of bead making in Venice goes back to the days of Marco Polo. When he returned from his travels with the beads of Asia, local artisans used their glass making skills to reproduce in glass the precious stones he found in his travels. The beading industry has historically been a woman's work in Venice and Murano.
The island of Murano is located north of Venice in Italy, a prosperous commercial port since the 7th Century. Murano became the center of Venetian glass making in 1291, when glass foundries were moved from Venice to reduce the risk of fires. The Venetian Republic was also determined to retain their unique glass craft, so punishment for deserters who left the Murano Lagoon with glass making secrets was swift and harsh.
Murano beads are the intricate glass beads influenced by Venetian glass artists. Since 1291,the vibrancy of Murano glass is unmistakable, appearing to glow from within. Most Murano beads are made using an open flame, and are called Lampwork Beads. The Lampwork method is the most time consuming method of glass bead-making. Wedding cake beads ~(decorated with glass overlays featuring roses, swirls and dots) and Venetian foil beads (with a fusion of color, and gold and silver foil) are just two of the kinds of beads made using the lamp-work method.
The Societa Veneziana de Conterie was a consortium of sixteen bead making families who joined their businesses in 1898, they ceased production in 1992. They were instrumental in promoting Murano Glass as an Art Form. Each and every bead was made by hand, and because they kept most of their bead making process secret…their quality became well known, and their rich, unique colors were desired around the world.
