Mobe or Mabe pearls are considered to be “semi-spherical cultured pearls”. Instead of growing inside the body of the mollusk creature, as is the case with other pearls, mobe pearls grow against the inside shell. This process causes mobe pearls to have a flat side, as opposed to being relatively spherical, or at least rounded like standard pearls. Mobe pearls are most frequently produced within saltwater oysters within the regions of Japan, Indonesia, Australia, and French Polynesia. Mobe pearls come in a wide range of beautiful pearl colors, which span from light pinks, to more bluish shades. The unique nacre of the mobe oyster allows for hues that are quite brilliant and rainbow-like. After about 2-3 years of growth time, the oysters are harvested, and the blister pearls are cut out of the shells. Their nucleus is removed and the inside of the mabé pearl is lacquered and then filled with a resin and then sealed with a mother of pearl backing. You can easily find the area where they sealed the mabé pearl shut, but most jewelry will hide the seam so it will not be visible to the wearer.
