This workshop is inspired by repeat pattern and colour. I made this cushion while listening to a talking book so I didn’t concentrate too hard on the design. Grids and simple shapes (leaf circles, butterflies see gallery at the end of the document) are great to get going but you could use any shape you like.
It’s a good idea to decide on a colour scheme before we start it doesn’t have to be red. Don’t think too hard about it….just enjoy the process of making!
The base background fabrics are hand dyed cottons, space dyed or pre bought in your preferred colour scheme.
To make this cushion you will also need fabric to make the back. This cushion is 40cms x 40cms but I added a 5 cm border
Zip 35 cm
Cushion pad…feather is nice 40 x 40 cm.
½ m firm iron on Vilene
Iron and ironing pad + baking parchment
For transfer printing…
Photocopy paper 20 sheets
Paintbrush sponges etc.
Plate, water dropper, jam jar, face mask
Stencils with smallish patterns
Synthetic fabric in white, satins, lining fabric, evalon, lutradur, anything you have in your store cupboard
Transfer Dyes (dysperse)
Your sewing machine…don’t forget free machine embroidery foot
Embroidery threads, metallic threads.
I used some stranded metallic to machine couch on the surface
Hand dyed or bought perle and cotton threads for cable stitch
Ruler, Pencil, Sheet of paper, A4
Pair of compasses
Sewing machine with foot suitable for free machine embroidery
Basic sewing kit: scissors, pins, needles, hand-stitching thread
