Item details

This fabric was hand woven on a treadle loom in the highlands of Guatemala without the use of electricity. It is 36 inches wide and is 100% cotton. It is sold by the yard. The colors of the stripes remind me of the old Juicy Fruit gum stripes! (yes, I know, I'm dating myself now)

The fabric was woven in the Mayan tradition on a treadle loom. The weaving process is one that has been handed down in the Mayan communities from generation to generation. It is said the the Maya goddess Ixchel gave the gift of weaving to her people.

I travel to Guatemala and hand select each piece of fabric. I buy from people I've bought from for many years. It is my goal to share my love of Guatemala with everyone who loves textiles.

The last picture is of the church Escuela de Cristo. This is the view outside my window from my friend's house. Yes, that is a volcano in the background!!!

Additional policies

All the fabrics on this site are 100% cotton hand-dyed and hand-woven in Guatemala. The regular fabric is 36 inches wide. The fabric is not cut until you buy it. When you order multiple yards, you'll receive your fabric in a continuous piece.

Since these fabrics are hand woven there might be slight imperfections. These are characteristics that make the fabric stand out from machine made fabrics.

The corte pieces are different widths. The width of each one is in the description.

Fabrics should be prewashed before sewing with them. Edges of the fabric should be zigzagged to prevent fraying. Fabrics should be washed with like colors in the washing machine on the gently cycle with a warm wash. In order to ensure that colors don’t run, add 1 teaspoon of the fixative, Retayne, for every yard of fabric. Remove fabric from the machine right after the final spin cycle. Dry in the dryer until damp dry using the coolest temperature. Fabric should then be hung up to finish drying.

Retayne can be ordered on-line from any number of sites such as Joanne’s or Amazon.
