Item details

This tenugui features a pair of jumping sea bream on a rich navy base.

It's about 90cm x 34cm(35.43" x 13.39").

Tenugui are traditional Japanese cotton cloths. They were originally used as hand towels and head bands, but are used today mainly as room accents and come in a huge variety of motifs. These would make striking room accents, on a wall or a table.

Sea bream are a popular motif in Japan, as they are connected with good fortune. This in part comes from the fact that the Japanese word for the fish, 'tai', is by chance the sound in the final part of the word 'omedetai', which is used at auspicious occasions such as weddings, etc. Red is also an auspicious color, so this motif is a wonderful way to commemorate someone's happy occasion, or to decorate your own space and welcome good luck!

If you've purchased my furoshiki wrapping cloths, please note that tenugui cotton is a plain weave that is lighter that the fabric used for most of my furoshiki, and it is flat, with a plain texture, more similar to the sort of fabric used for bandanas, so it might not be as suitable for some fabric projects. And unlike my furoshiki, tenugui are not finished at the ends, threads are left loose.

Because the ends are not sewn, the horizontal threads(the woof may fray a bit as it's used. If you wash your tenugui, I recommend hand washing for at least the first few times. The raw ends of tenugui will gradually tighten after being washed a few times.

Average review
It's wonderful that the tai symbolizes good fortune because it feels like a lucky tenugui, and I think it's just so beautiful that the design itself earned plenty of compliments from my friends.

Bon produit mais il faudrait préciser dans la description lorsque les modèles sont imprimés recto-verso (ce n'est pas le cas de celui-là malheureusement — donc petite déception)
