Enjoy some delicious home-grown black raspberries! The berries have a stronger taste than their red cousins and are higher in antioxidants. The fruit is also rich in anthocyanin pigments, making it a good choice for those wishing to make natural homemade dyes. Unripe fruits are red, turning a dark purple-black when they are ready to be picked.
Readily self-propagating canes can grow to lengths of 9 feet. Seeds may be sown in spring or fall. Canes produce fruit during their second year. Like the red raspberry, the canes do have thorns.
