Wow, now this is an interesting and wonderful piece of history.
We're learned from the wonderful Photo-Sleuth blog (http://photo-sleuth.blogspot.com/2009/10/musing-in-manhattan.html) that this photo was taken by Sol Young Studios, a small photography mogul with studios all around New York and New Jersey. Based on which studios were printed on the back of his card is when you can determine the years which photos were taken: the list on the back of this portfolio points to the mid 1920s.
More than anything else, though, is the beautiful photo itself. While the portfolio card shows some sign of wear and an oil stain or two, the photograph has remained intact and ultimately untouched. Featuring a young girl sitting on an ornate chair, looking both sweet and confused, this photograph must have at one point been cherished by someone.
Almost 100 years later, the child looks just as awkward in a staged photograph as kids do today.
