Handmade Pincushion - Soft Sculpture Foot in Lavender and Green Goody Goody Slipper with Wired Pink Flower and Green Leaves - My Left Foot
A few years ago, I discovered some suptuous cushioned slippers, "Goody Goody" brand. Even living in Minnesota, one pair of great slippers is adequate - perhaps I could make an argument for two pair, but --- they are just SO CUTE!!! Because I have been working on a new line of pincushions - made in the same way as a soft sculpture doll's foot - it suddenly dawned on me that I could combine my love for these sumptuous slippers with my soft sculpture foot pincushion. This is the result of that brainstorm. My first realization was, nobody wants a pincushion if the slipper is big enough to fit MY big feet~! So I started looking for the Goody Goody slippers in child size.
The slipper is 6.5" long by 3" wide by 2.5" high, and was beautifully created by Goody Goody from lavender brocade and green velvet. This pair is made similar to a ballet shoe in style, with a lavender brocade covered elastic strap. The toe of the slipper is embellished with a 2" pink wired ribbon flower. There is a black suede sole - inside the slipper, the "Goody" label, proof that this is the real deal. These slippers were very gently used, acquired at an online auction, but if new, they sell for $28 a pair. Beautiful, aren't they? They smell clean and fresh, and as is true with all my items, they have been stored in a zipper top bag.
The handmade soft sculpture foot is 6" long x 2.75" wide x 1.5" high. It has been made the same way a soft sculpture doll's foot is made - five toes, the bottoms of the feet are touched with pink blush, because it amuses me.
I realize the idea of a pincushion made from a baby shoe is NOT a new idea. However, to my knowledge, I am the first to market this particular idea, an actual soft sculpture foot inside the shoe!! Imagine my surprise when I did not have to consult a pattern or a book to make the toes. It had been perhaps 10 years since I made one of these dolls. I can't remember my mothers maiden name, but I remember how to make toes. Unbelievable! And, as you might soon notice, I have been getting lots of practice, making several different foot pincushions in different types of shoes and even slippers - for my shop. The foot is removable, because what is the point of buying a shoe with a soft sculpture foot unless you can remove the foot and giggle? In order to reinsert the foot, just like Cinderella's stepsisters, there might be some squeezing and twisting, but they will go back in. Once the foot is in the slipper, as a final step, I like to gently pull the heel portion of the foot upward just a bit to fill the area where the ankle usually is.
The exposed portion of the foot that shows inside the slipper - 3.5" x 1.5", is generous enough, the perfect spot for pins. My personal opinion is, I would use the "foot" for pins, but I would not make pin holes in the lavender brocade or the velvet. Do you like My Left Foot? This perfectly absurd little slipper pincushion might be for you!
