True Culinary Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a Hardy Plant from a Perennial Bulb. Edible Bulb, Tropical Appearance and Hardy Landscape Plant -- it's a multi-purpose Permaculture Plant!!
A bit of plant culture...
True Ginger is an Easy to Grow Perennial in the Outdoor Herb Garden in USDA Zone 8 to 12 in full sun to part shade. it enjoys routine moisture but also does well in routinely watered landscape spots.
We like the 2 foot tall bright green stalks and leaf that shine in the garden. The Foliage has the appearance of being Highly Tropical without the demands of a true Tropical. When the plant is mature, it will produce larger stalks and 2 to 3" Attractive Rosey Cone-shaped buds.
..Most of all, we value the plant for the highly aromatic rhizomes or bulbs that are Edible...It's a great culinary treat.
This is an excellent Culinary Herb for Container Gardening or the Indoor Herb Garden. The harvest becomes easier when the tub is 'dumped out' in the fall and the ginger 'eyes' harvested and then replanted back into replenished soil The plant demands excellent drainage and organically rich soil...We plant a couple dead guppies down in the bottom of the pot at harvest time...but don' tell the kids!
Keep the plant moist, but not soaked and a drain platter underneath the container may help. We raise Culinary Ginger for the rhizomes and keep the tops trimmed down to about 8" at most in the Growing Containers. Keeping the tops pruned, signals the plant to produce more rhizomes!
Letting the blooms develop is an option as well and the stems are strong so the cones are an excellent addition to a bouquet. The plant is an good choice for the Cutting Garden as well.

Shipping & policies
We ship in the Order of Paid Invoices...and while our goal is prompt shipment of all orders. However shipping delays can occur during period of High Sales (Spring Planting and Christmas) or due to periods of Severe Weather. We routinely do not ship some plants during the Heat of August. If in doubt as to the specific shipping date of the items you purchased, please send us a note!...
We welcome your messages or special requests. We attempt to respond to all messages promptly...sometimes, the response requires a bit of time to research.
Our Growing Philosophy....We propagate through seedlings, cuttings, and division of well-established plants. We do not use chemicals and allow the plant to establish root systems naturally. This may - or may not - create a smaller plant or a longer growing period than the 'Treated with Nitrogen' plants visible at Big Box Stores.
We do not grow hundreds of any one plant, but prefer to grow hundreds of different plants instead...Numbers of plants are often limited.
We offer many native varieties because we like them and strongly believe that the Heritage of Natives should be retained. We Never collect them from the wild. We grow them from cuttings or seeds from our own Garden and Property.
We ship with excess soil removed from the root system. The roots are wrapped in dampened materials and securely encased in plastic. Each plant is labeled as to the common and botanical names. We ship USPS. We have been using this method for more than 30 years and have found it to be highly reliable...
We routinely ship Plant Materials within the Continental USA. Alaska, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands require additional shipping costs...and we will create a Designated Listing for your additional shipping and handling costs.
We can not replace or refund Plant, Seed or Cutting material that has been confiscated by a governmental agency...regardless of the reason. We can no longer maintain current information on State Regulations for Live Plant Shipment. It is the Buyer's Responsibility to know when a plant is considered "non-shippable" into their state.
Due to USDA regulations, we ship no plants, seeds, or cuttings to Hawaii.
