Item details

For years reed makers have longed for more than two choices in FF gauge variegated reed thread. Reed maker and oboist Stephanie Patterson decided to take matters into her own hands by hand dying her own variegated reed thread. The thread starts out as natural white FF gauge nylon thread, and is hand dyed and hand wrapped onto plastic spools. FF gauge reed thread is preferred by many oboists and bassoonists because it is strong yet thin, which makes for very attractive reeds.

'Murica hand dyed FF gauge reed thread is red, white, and blue. Perfect for Fourth of July concerts, showing your patriotic spirit, or, if you start with the blue, playing in a pit for Les Miserables or representing France. The thread is dyed so that on most oboe reeds all three colors will show.

Each spool contains about 75 yards of high quality, hand dyed, FF gauge reed thread.

Oboe Reed Care Information

Always soak the cane of your reed in water for 1-5 minutes before playing.
If the cork fits too tightly in your oboe, put some cork grease on the cork to help it fit into your oboe’s reed well. This is very important! If the reed fits too tightly, your hand could slip removing the reed and break it.
If your reed gets stuck in the oboe, use a cloth or the bottom of your shirt to grab the cork as you remove it. Remember to twist as you pull the reed out.
Store your reed in a case made for oboe reeds. This will allow your reed to dry properly, and prevent breakage. If you must keep your reed in the mailing tube, be sure to use a pin to poke a hole in the cap to allow your reed to dry. The tube is not crush proof, so keep your reed in the mailing tube AT YOUR OWN RISK.
